| The Caterham 7 Superlight is built around Colin Chapman’s ethos of ‘add lightness’. Superlight is all about lightweight performance on the road and track. All unnecessary comforts are removed to save weight and reduce mass. The result is a car that delivers driving thrills at their purest, with performance to take your breath away. |
| |

Whilst Superlight shares the chassis
and many other parts in common with
Roadsport-spec cars, the specification
is significantly more performance
orientated. Standard equipment includes
6 speed close-ratio performance gearbox,
wide-track front suspension and carbon-fibre
lightweight front cycle wings.
Superlight incorporates the motorsport
expertise of Caterham Engineering,
gained through 20 years of its industry
leading one-make race championships.
The Caterham 7 is among the most raced
car models in the world, with 700
competitors across 11 countries. Everything
Caterham has learnt about performance
and safety is incorporated into the
design of the Superlight.
Three variants are currently offered
in the range, the 150bhp Superlight
model, the 160bhp Superlight R300
and the awesomely quick Superlight
R400, with 210bhp.
Superlight/R300
The standard Superlight is fitted
with the 150bhp 1.6 Ford Sigma engine,
new for 2007, which gives substantial
gains in torque and economy over the
outgoing 140bhp engine. Meanwhile,
the R300 is powered by the meaty 1.8
K-Series VVC engine*, known for its
free-revving nature and lightweight
alloy construction.

Engines
The ‘R300’ name refers to the power
to weight ratio of over 300bhp per
tonne, which puts the R300 easily
within the same performance envelope
as supercars costing 4 to 5 times
as much.
*K-Series VVC available whilst stocks
last.
R400
Topping the Superlight range is the
devastatingly quick R400. With a 210bhp
2 litre Duratec engine and wrapped
in the lightweight frame of the standard
chassis, the R400 has few peers. Indeed,
many quarter-million-pound supercars
would struggle to match the R400’s
blistering pace on the track or down
a twisty road.
This 2007 model year R400 is an update
on the 2002 original, much lauded
by the press as the most finely honed
balance of power and ability ever
offered by Caterham. The latest version
is based on the ‘C400’ race car used
in the Caterham Superlight Challenge
and Eurocup race series in 2006. In
every race of 2006, the C400 has proven
itself to be substantially quicker
than the K-Series R400.
As well as all the equipment of Superlight
and R300 models, the R400 also includes
ACES change up lights and limited
slip differential.
As with Roadsport models, Superlight
and Superlight R300 models are available
with SV wide-bodied chassis should
you require more interior space. If
you want to drive a car that delivers
on-road performance, raw driving thrills
and track-day ability in equal measure
then the Superlight is the Caterham
7 for you. |
