"My season in the Academy was fantastic fun and an enormous challenge... I can't think of a better introduction to motorsport." Jethro Bovingdon, evo magazine
Build your road-legal Caterham 7, get your racing licence, learn how to set-up your car and go head to head on the circuit for the first time!
The Academy is only open to those who have never held a racing licence before, and all cars are identical, so you can be sure that the racing will be very close and totally thrilling. But don't worry, the Caterham team will guide you through the process of building the car, setting it up to race, getting your racing licence and getting on circuit for the first time.
The Seven is the most popular racing car in the world today, and with good reason. As well as superb handling and grip, the cars are easy to maintain and have low running costs. For example, you will not need to change your tyres during the Academy season! Caterham racing is well known in motorsport circles for the intensity of the competition and the amount of overtaking that goes on, so you can be certain that you are entering a series that will give you a valuable introduction to the sport.
Also included in the package is a pre-season 'Handling day', where we will teach you how to steer on the throttle as well as the steering wheel – and put your new skills to the test through a series of special courses. The championship begins in earnest with speed events; a mixture of circuit sprints and hillclimbs. These events will allow you drive your car in anger for the first time against the clock, without the challenge of other competitors around you. The season then moves up a gear with circuit races, pitting you head to head against your peers for the first time. We guarantee that nothing will be more memorable than the scramble to the first corner in your very first motor race!
The Caterham Academy is about learning in a fun and safe environment, and is open to anyone who holds a current UK driving licence. Although the racing is competitive, the Academy is well known for its friendly and open atmosphere and fantastic camaraderie.
Your Caterham 7 will be supplied in complete kit form, as is the tradition, for you to self build. Assembly is straightforward and requires no special tools, typically taking around 50 to 70 hours to complete. However, if you wish, your Academy car can be assembled for you at our factory for an additional cost.
Places for the Academy are in high demand and usually sell out more than 6 months before the start of the season in March, so we advise you to register your interest as early as possible.

What car am I buying?
Academy cars are a modified Caterham 7 Roadsport specification, with some additional equipment for the circuit added, such as a full rollcage, fire extinguisher and battery master switch. (n.b. some Roadsport standard equipment is deleted, such as carpets.) A 1.6 litre Ford Sigma engine with 125bhp and a five speed gearbox are fitted. Optional extras include paint and race seats. The specification has been honed over 12 years to make the cars safe, cost effective to run, easy to drive on the limit and inexpensive to repair.
Can I use my car when I'm not racing?
Absolutely! The car is fully road legal and yours to use and enjoy throughout the Academy season and beyond!
I am not very technical; will I be able to build and set-up the car?
Building a Caterham 7 is straightforward and requires only basic mechanical skills. Full technical support is provided by our aftersales team. However, should you wish to have the car built for you, it can be assembled at our factory for an additional cost of £3000 inc VAT. Pre-race checks and car set-up are covered in detail as part of your Academy training package.
Am I eligible for a racing licence?
If you hold a full UK driving licence, then you almost certainly will be eligible. However, a medical is required for ARDS licensing (included in the Academy price) and certain medical conditions may preclude you from holding a licence. If you have any concerns, please contact us.
What other equipment do I need?
To compete you will need to purchase a suitable race suit, gloves and helmet. We can advise you on appropriate clothing, equipment and suppliers. Although we encourage you to drive your Caterham to events, many people choose to purchase or hire a trailer to transport the car (with family). Brian James Trailers are a long standing supporter of the Academy and the 'Minno' trailer is universally recommended as THE trailer for towing a Caterham.
I'm 6'0" and 15 stone, will small, light drivers have an advantage?
There is a minimum weight limit for the car with, which means that most drivers will have to add ballast in the form of lead. The Aftersales team can assist with this if necessary. This evens up the cars, though even 'much' heavier drivers have not been disadvantaged with a former champion being the biggest, heaviest person on the grid!
How will I know what to do or where to go – who will answer my questions?
The Academy Championship has a dedicated coordinator, Jennifer Grace. Jennifer will tell you exactly what you should be doing and when, and will remind you frequently! Anything you need to fill out in the way of forms, simply all go to Jennifer. She's the only person you need to know!
Is it safe?
All motorsport is dangerous, however the Caterham 7 has an exceptional safety record in motorsport. Safety is a priority in the construction of the vehicles, and Academy cars include a full rollcage enclosure, fire extinguisher, battery master switch, fuel tank protection and side impact protection. Academy events have strict rules and regulations to ensure that you and other competitors enjoy motorsport safely.
What do I do at the end of the season?
The Academy is designed to be the perfect introduction to motorsport and the first step on the Caterham Racing ladder. For example. the following season you could enter the Caterham Roadsport-B Challenge with the same car; which is open only to your Academy year drivers and invited novices – ensuring the level playing field of experience continues. Alternatively, you may wish to use your car primarily on the road, in which case it can be easily converted to a road/touring specification. If you decide to sell the car, you will be pleased to find that Caterham 7 residuals are among the best for any vehicle on the road!
Is finance available?
Subject to status, we can offer a variety of finance options to suit your pocket.
