CATERHAMS THRILL AT SILVERSTONE

Six races and six different winners - that was the outcome over the weekend (10/11 August) at Silverstone where the men and women of the Motorsport News Caterham Roadsport Challenge and the Daily Telegraph Caterham Academy did battle against the conditions, which were treacherously wet on Saturday and dry on Sunday, and each other.

Trevor Fowell maintained his unbroken victory run in Academy Group 1, taking his fifth straight win despite heavy pressure from Matthew Draper. Draper broke past pole-sitter Fowell to lead on the third lap and held on in front for six tours before spinning. Fowell gratefully accepted the win, finishing ahead of Gordon Sawyer and Ian Davis, with Draper recovering to fifth behind Paul Brannan.

Mark Fulford made a hash of his start from the pole in Academy Group 2, slipping to third behind Kai Lo and Jonathan Hill on the opening lap. It took Fulford five laps to get back on top but thereafter his progress to his maiden win was serene. Lo fell by the wayside with car problems and Keith Ashworth battled up from ninth on the grid to take second, with Michael Scott nabbing third from championship leader Donald Lamb on the final lap; Lamb was fortunate to make the race after hitting a wall in qualifying and sees his points lead cut to two.
